چکیده
The feedback effects of massive stars on their galactic and intergalactic environments can dominate evolutionary processes in galaxies and affect cosmic structure in the Universe. Only the Local Group offers the spatial resolution to quantitatively study feedback processes on a variety of scales. Lyman continuum radiation from hot, luminous stars ionizes H ii regions and is believed to dominate production of the warm component of the interstellar medium (ISM). Some of this radiation apparently escapes from galaxies into the intergalactic environment. Su-pernovae and strong stellar winds generate shell structures such as supernova remnants, stellar wind bubbles, and superbubbles around OB associations. Hot (10 6 K) gas is generated within these shells, and is believed to be the origin of the hot component of the ISM. Superbubble activity thus is likely to dominate the ISM structure, kinematics, and phase balance in star-forming galaxies. Galactic superwinds in starburst galaxies enable the escape of mass, ionizing radiation, and heavy elements. Although many important issues remain to be resolved, there is little doubt that feedback processes plays a fundamental role in energy cycles on scales ranging from individual stars to cosmic structure. This contribution reviews studies of radiative and mechanical feedback in the Local Group.

We report the detection of H2CO (formaldehyde) around the carbon-rich AGB star, IRC+10216. We find a fractional abundance with respect to molecular hydrogen of x(H2CO) = 1.3 +1.5 −0.8 × 10 . This corresponds to a formaldehyde abundance with respect to water vapor of x(H2CO)/x(H2O) = (1.1±0.2)×10 , in line with the formaldehyde abundances found in Solar System comets, and indicates that the puta...

We have identified and classified Zeeman pairs in the survey by Argon, Reid, & Menten of massive star-forming regions with 18 cm (Π3/2, J = 3/2) OH maser emission. We have found a total of more than 100 Zeeman pairs in more than 50 massive star-forming regions. The magnetic field deduced from the Zeeman splitting has allowed us to assign an overall line-of-sight magnetic field direction to many...

The global star formation rate (SFR) density is estimated from the star formation histories (SFHs) of Local Group galaxies. This is found to be broadly consistent with estimates of the global SFH from existing redshift surveys for two favoured cosmologies. It also provides additional evidence for a relatively constant global SFR density at high redshift (z > 1).
